Dunstable Downs - Chute Wood

Project Overview

PVR was appointed by the National Trust to deliver a new accessible, year-round multi-use circular route at Dunstable Downs, improving access for visitors of all abilities while protecting one of the country's most sensitive landscapes. The route connects the Windcatcher, Chute Wood and the Chiltern Gateway Centre, creating an inclusive visitor experience through a combination of open chalk downland and woodland environments.

The project was carefully designed and delivered to enhance accessibility without compromising the site's ecological, environmental and visual character, which accommodates approximately 300,000 visitors each year.

Scope of Works

  • Construction of a new unbound multi-use accessible trail.

  • Traditional excavated path construction across chalk grassland using Type 1 sub-base with granite fines surfacing.

  • No-dig construction through Chute Wood using a cellular confinement system to protect tree root protection areas.

  • Installation of timber edging with shallow build-up construction to avoid root disturbance.

  • Placement of 6mm-to-dust granite surfacing, blended with surrounding ground levels to provide a natural appearance.

  • Integration of the new route with existing visitor infrastructure and public rights of way.
